The California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) issued citations this week for “willful” and “serious” violations uncovered during inspections at Los Angeles World Airport (LAX) that found unsafe working conditions in Menzies Aviation’s operations on airport premises.
Violations include an inadequate safety guard on a high-lift industrial truck and failure to train workers on how to properly handle hazardous substances as well as improper storage of hazardous substances in cargo warehouses on airport premises.
The company was also cited for faulty electrical equipment and for failing to keep an oxygen cylinder separated from a fuel gas cylinder. An inspector also witnessed a forklift operator leaving his truck unattended while a worker was suspended on the lift’s elevated platform.
Fines for the violations total $94,550.
