Device manufacturers in the European Economic Area must comply with the third edition of the EN 60601 electrical safety standard by December 31, 2017.

There is a possibility of an earlier date for compliance according to Annex ZZ of EN 60601-1 third edition.

Richard Vincins, Vice President of Quality Assurance Consulting at Emergo Group, indicates companies should be prepared to be in compliance by the December 2017 date. He also indicates the differences between versions of the electrical safety standard, including International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Europe’s EN designation.

Device makers are advised to consult their electrical safety testing laboratories regarding the differences as they apply to location and distribution of their  electrical and electronic equipment.
