An employee of U.S. Steel’s Minntac Taconite plant in Mountain Iron, MN suffered serious injuries in an electrical accident on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, reports Jon Malek was injured in an electrical explosion while working on an electrical apparatus. He was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

Courtney Boone, a U.S. Steel spokeswoman, made a written statement to the Duluth News Tribune: “Safety is a core value at U.S. Steel and the incident is under review in cooperation with regulatory authorities and the United Steelworkers. Operations have been suspended at this time.”
