Author Thomas Dalton of BMT Syntek Technologies writes a  detailed article on the impact of low & medium voltage AC shipbard power systems.  The concern that repeatedly arises with each new ship design that crosses over from a low voltage power system to a medium voltage power system is “What is the added hazard to the crew?”. This paper identifies that hazard as shock threat and arc flash energy release, addresses the risk associated with these hazards in terms of likelihood and consequences and explains the technical aspects of shock and arc flash for background understanding.
